FOSSA Systems, a Spanish satellite IoT provider has collaborated with Microsoft Research to push the boundaries of what we know and how we use low-power industrial satellite IoT solutions. The partnership has explored the potential of satellite-based IoT for a variety of applications, including precision agriculture, livestock monitoring, and connected industry.

The research focused on the scalability and versatility of satellite IoT for global connectivity with both companies leveraging LoRa technology to demonstrate efficient satellite networking IoT communications. FOSSA Systems also launched the MSRSAT-1 satellite in May 2022, providing a real-world platform for testing and advancing satellite IoT connectivity. “MSRSAT-1 has been a unique opportunity to test satellite IoT connectivity with Microsoft on a real-world testbed,” says Julián Fernández, CEO and Co-Founder of FOSSA Systems.

Microsoft Research is scheduled to present the invaluable insights gained from this project at the upcoming USENIX NSDI conference in April 2024 with a comprehensive research paper titled, “Spectrum-efficient Satellite Networks for the Internet of Things.” The paper will highlight the development of efficient, scalable, and robust satellite IoT networks that resulted from the partnership.

“Space communication is a promising technology to bring the benefits of Generative AI to more people and industries,” states Ranveer Chandra, Managing Director of Research for Industry at Microsoft Research. “Our combined efforts and programmable satellites have enabled researchers at Microsoft to experiment with cutting-edge capabilities and to push the state of the art in spectrum sharing.”
