The newspaper indicated that SpaceX is solidifying its partnership with U.S. intelligence and military agencies through lucrative contracts and the expansion of a secret satellite initiative, Starshield, which is tailored for national-security purposes.
This initiative underscores a deepening alliance between the private sector and government defense entities, the newspaper reports.
SpaceX, founded by Elon Musk, has emerged as a pivotal player in the space industry, buoyed by a $1.8 billion classified contract with the U.S. government in 2021. This contract is poised to become a crucial component of SpaceX’s revenue, marking a notable increase in the company’s involvement with national security projects. Although the details of the government customer remain undisclosed, the contract’s magnitude reflects SpaceX’s growing integration with the national-security establishment.
SpaceX’s engagement with U.S. defense has traditionally encompassed launching classified and military satellites. The company’s Starlink broadband service has also been utilized by the Pentagon, notably providing internet connections in Ukraine during its conflict with Russia. Starshield, however, represents a more covert facet of SpaceX’s operations, focusing on services for government clients, including secure communications and surveillance capabilities. Despite its low profile, Starshield has already secured a $70 million military contract for communications services, highlighting its strategic importance to the Pentagon and its partners, The Wall Street Journal reports.
Gwynne Shotwell, SpaceX’s president, has emphasized the strong collaboration between SpaceX and the intelligence community, albeit acknowledging the sensitive nature of their projects.
“When I’m never sure what I can say in a public forum, I tend to zip it. But I can say that there is very good collaboration between the intelligence community and SpaceX,” Gwynne Shotwell, the company’s president, said at an event last May, as reported by The Wall Street Journal.
The newspaper points out that one example of this partnership was a 2022 SpaceX launch in California for a National Reconnaissance Office operation. The office is a key national-security client.
Starshield’s mission, as revealed on a recently publicized webpage, involves offering satellites designed for secure communications, earth observation, and carrying various sensors for government use in orbit. The demand for personnel with top-secret clearances and experience in the Defense Department and intelligence community in Starshield’s job postings further reveals the program’s critical role in national defense.
