Insider Brief:

  • Microsoft has been awarded a $19.8 million contract by the US Space Systems Command.
  • The contract is to develop a cloud-based space simulation called the Integrated, Immersive, Intelligent Environment (I3E).
  • The I3E is seeking accreditation to handle both unclassified and classified information, allowing the Space Systems Command to turn prototype capabilities into reality.

The US Space Systems Command has awarded Microsoft a one-year $19.8 million contract to develop a cloud-based space simulation called the Integrated, Immersive, Intelligent Environment (I3E). This augmented reality simulation, built on Microsoft’s Azure cloud computing infrastructure and compatible with HoloLens headsets, allows users to interact with space-based objects and integrate capabilities into space architectures.

The I3E, currently available at the Space Force’s Los Angeles location, hosts four missions, including physics-based space environments, satellite simulations, space intelligence collection, scheduling, and strategic orbital wargaming.

The contract, initiated on December 1, 2023, can be extended for an additional three years. The goal is to eventually scale the solution to other locations, enabling users to access it via a virtual desktop. The I3E is seeking accreditation to handle both unclassified and classified information, allowing the Space Systems Command to turn prototype capabilities into reality. This development is expected to provide an unparalleled experience for understanding the space domain.
