Founded in 2013 as Isotropic Systems Ltd by John Finney to revolutionize global connectivity, in 2022 the company underwent a transformation, emerging as ALL.SPACE. With a relentless mission to pioneer innovation, pushing the limits of connectivity on a global scale for customers around the world, ALL.SPACE has introduced its 5th generation smart terminal, capable of seamless connectivity with every satellite and network, regardless of their orbits. Its novel software-defined service enablement platform integrates intelligent routing, edge computing, and on-demand services, delivering unmatched network resilience and application performance.

This month in an exclusive interview conducted at World Satellite Business Week 2023 by SpaceWatch.Global, Chris Emerson, the newly appointed Chairman of the Board at ALL.SPACE, shared his compelling reasons for joining the company and delved into the immense growth potential it holds.

While the space industry experiences unprecedented expansion, it remains confronted by persistent technological hurdles, ranging from the need for real-time monitoring to the demand for simultaneous multi-orbit connections. Thus, the imperative for next-generation ground capabilities becomes increasingly evident.

Natural Curiosity

“I have a natural, you know, curiosity about technology. So, whenever I learn about something new that companies are doing, I’m drawn naturally to understand,” said Emerson when asked about why he joined ALL.SPACE.

Emerson believes that the intellectual property innovations developed over the past decade are at the forefront of potentially bringing about significant changes in various customer segments. He mentioned that he had the chance to meet with ALL.SPACE’s founder and CEO John Finney, and Emerson emphasized that the combination of remarkable technology and effective leadership was truly inspiring.

“When you have a convergence of great technology, and a great leader, that’s inspiring,” Emerson added. “You can’t say no to that. So that’s kind of my story of how I came here to ALL.SPACE.”

Bringing a rich tapestry of expertise from his extensive tenure in the aerospace and defence sectors, Emerson offers ALL.SPACE a valuable reservoir of experience. He has held esteemed positions, including Chairman and CEO of Airbus U.S. Space and Defense and, before that, President of Airbus Helicopters Inc. Additionally, his executive roles encompassed diverse responsibilities, ranging from marketing and product strategy to financial management.

Consumers of Data

“I would say beyond defence. Let’s face it, we are consumers of data,” Emerson answered when asked whether ALL.SPACE’s new terminal is so important for defence. “You know, I look at my 14- and 12-year-old daughters and I compare to when I was their age the amount of data that they consume today. It’s unbelievable and it’s only exponentially growing.”

As he reflects on the broader picture, Emerson recognizes that our interconnectedness is like an intricate thread woven throughout our lives, binding our communities and shaping our cultures. While terrestrial limitations govern the amount of data we can access, the transition to space introduces a new set of challenges, including the inherent constraints of radiofrequency and optical communications.

The ability to seamlessly connect a single device to multiple frequencies in various orbits without interruption becomes pivotal, he believes. Maintaining a consistent level of data service is crucial as our data consumption continues to surge in the future. In this context, Emerson is sure that a product like the ALL.SPACE’s smart terminal, capable of evolving to meet the ever-growing demands of tomorrow, becomes an essential component as we chart our course for the future.

Smart

To conclude the interview, Emerson was put on the spot and asked to predict where ALL.SPACE fits into the various technological verticals:

“It starts with a great platform, a great product like the terminal, but then you add a keyword to the terminal, “smart”. Smart, what does that really mean? But you know, having that ability to adapt the agility to understand what the needs are, how we improve the service level with our terminal and being modular in nature, we can continue to grow and I think that’s really what’s in the future,” said Emerson, before adding that the current terminal is a wonderful foundation, giving ALL.SPACE the ability to grow and meet the industry’s needs today and tomorrow.
