PRESS RELEASE — Coimbra, Portugal / July 31, 2023 — Neuraspace, a European-born global leader in space traffic management (STM), has joined NVIDIA Inception, a programme that nurtures startups revolutionising industries with artificial intelligence (AI).

NVIDIA Inception will allow Neuraspace to get faster access to cutting-edge AI-related technology and best-in-class tools while enhancing its existing AI system. Furthermore, it will optimise Neuraspace’s research and development efforts to apply AI to its operational STM system.

In addition, Neuraspace will benefit from NVIDIA’s AI expertise, software frameworks, technical training, hardware for machine learning (ML) training and inference, and embedded AI. Inception will also offer Neuraspace the opportunity to collaborate with industry-leading experts, as well as AI- and edge-driven organisations.

Chiara Manfletti, Director and COO of Neuraspace, said:

“Participating in the NVIDIA Inception programme allows us to continue our path of revolutionising the STM industry. This collaboration will propel Neuraspace towards achieving our mission of delivering advanced solutions for safer and more efficient space operations. It is also a testament to Neuraspace’s commitment to innovating space traffic management. By joining this esteemed programme, we are poised to benefit from NVIDIA’s top-of-class technologies and expertise.

“By utilising the NVIDIA Inception programme, we will pave the way for a future where space traffic management is transformed, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable space ecosystem.”

The need for new space traffic management systems
An increasing number of satellites and space debris intensifies the risk of collisions that can damage and destroy satellites, which would cause serious environmental damage and huge losses to satellite operators. Current space situational awareness (SSA) and collision avoidance (CA) approaches rely heavily on manual processes and are therefore unable to cope with the 15x expected increase in the number of satellites and debris. Commercial STM solutions are necessary to address the urgent needs of satellite operators to minimise operational effort and impact on services.

Neuraspace brings innovation to STM via three methods. First via its proprietary ML models for nowcasting and forecasting of the space environment and the automation of STM processes. Using ML models, Neuraspace complements physical knowledge and models with pattern recognition, thereby quickly resolving complex problems.

Second, via new data sources from new technologies, such as laser, star trackers, event cameras, radars and on-board GNSS (global navigation satellite system), to complement traditional optical telescope data. The urgently needed increase in the location precision of objects in space cannot be tackled by optical telescopes alone, and new data sources must be exploited to derive the best possible knowledge of the global space environment and the immediate environment around a satellite to secure its safety.

And third, via on-boarding satellite intelligence, which overcomes limitations of inherently slow and only ground-controlled processes, thereby increasing the resilience of the spacecraft.

NVIDIA Inception helps startups during critical stages of product development, prototyping and deployment. Every NVIDIA Inception member gets a custom set of ongoing benefits, such as NVIDIA Deep Learning Institute credits, marketing support and technology assistance, which provides startups with the fundamental tools to help them grow.
